Walk to end violence against women

Walk A Mile In Her Shoes - YWCA Hamilton

YWCA Hamilton believes that all women, children and families deserve to live a life free of violence.

Why women? Because half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one form of violence. Girls and young women are eight times more likely to be victims of sexual assault and women and girls are five times more likely to experience sexual violence than males.

Approximately every six days in Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner.

All violence is unacceptable and YWCA Hamilton is dedicated to ending violence in all of its forms. As an organization that is for, by and about women – we work to end violence against all women, including individuals who identify as women; regardless of what they were assigned at birth.

Violence against women and girls is the world’s largest human rights violation. Each year in Canada, over 75,000 woman and their children flee their homes to escape violence. Annually, over 60,000 Canadian women access emergency shelters, with fifty-one percent bringing along their children. As a result of violence, women and girls have become the fastest growing segment of the homeless population.

All too often, women are forced to choose between a life of violence or facing homelessness.

This is no choice at all.
