Do I Need A Toner?

Do I need to use a toner? At Kabuki, we get asked this question a lot.  And it is a good question.

In the past, toners used to rebalance the skins pH after using soap or harsh cleanser on the face.  Cleansers would strip skin of its natural hydro lipidic layer.  Fortunately for us, Cleanser are now more gentle on the skin and pH balanced themselves so the need for toners to rebalance to pH has slipped away.

A well formulated toner provides amazing benefits to your skin and the results are almost instantaneous.  Toners deliver essential nutrients and hydration.  They help heal and repair the skin keeping it healthy and youthful.

Toner’s open the skin up to receive more nutrients from your serums and moisturizers.

red-currant-tonerUsing a toner is an essential part of your routine.  We highly recommend using a toner at least  twice a day, morning and night, after your cleanser and before your serums and eye creams.    It is a good idea to have a toner in your purse, carry on travel bag or at your desk.  Spritz your face throughout the day to rehydrate, minimize oil production or give you a nice fresh feeling.

When you find a toner full of healthy ingredients you will achieve a healthy, radiant glow.  Applying a toner is the perfect addition to your skin care regime.

Which toner is right for you?

Never buy an alcohol based toner or one with fragrance.  Look for natural ingredients as many synthetic ingredients are from petrol by-product or animal by-product which do not penetrate the skin and can in fact damage the skin and the body more down the road.

Toners for Different Skin Types

Toners for Oily or Blemish-Prone Skin: look for key words such as “anti bacterial” “soothing” and “mattifying”.  Your toner needs to slow down oil production and kill the bacteria that creates breakouts.  It needs to refine pores and give your skin a beautiful texture.  Look for ingredients such as tea tree oil, elderflower, red currant, rosehips, vitamins A, C and E, willow bark (salicylic acid), and cucumber

Toners for Sensitive Skin: look for calming, soothing, hydrating properties.  Ingredients to look for are arnica, chamomile, ivy, horse chestnut, rosemary, lavender.

Toners for Dry or Mature Skin: You need hydrating, strengthening and firming ingredients such as bamboo, coconut water, stone crop, tara tree, vitamins A,C and E, salicylic acid.
